About Camp

Birds of a Feather Nature camp is a bird-watching and nature exploration day-camp that serves children in the Three Village area of Long Island, NY.  The program was founded in 2003 by Johnny and Kristin Cuomo. Johnny, teacher, avid bird-watcher and nature enthusiast was seeking a way to share his knowledge of local Long Island parks and their wildlife with the children that he taught, thus, camp was born.

About the Camp Week
Each session of camp runs from Monday to Thursday, with campers meeting at the Setauket Neighborhood House, in Setauket, NY. The camp runs on a half day schedule of three and one half hours, either in the morning or the afternoon. Campers meet at the Neighborhood House where they prepare for the day's activities.

Once everyone has arrived, Mr. C, his wife Kristin, the campers and any interested parents travel to one of many parks and nature preserves in the area. The children take about an hour hike and learn how to spot many native species in their natural habitats. The group keeps a list of everything observed, and upon returning to the Neighborhood house the children work on recording their daily observations and insights in their individual nature journals.

After the hike and journaling, each day also includes snack time and a special nature craft project or music & storytelling program from Mr. C.  Kristin and Mr. C always have special activities planned in the event of weather that will not permit a hike for the day.

Who can be a Camper?

All children grades kindergarten through sixth are welcome to sign up for camp. Mr. C sends out flyers to as many children in the Three Village School disctrict as possible, but children from any school in the area are welcome. Children do not need to have prior experience hiking or bird-watching. We recommend signing up if you have an interest in the natural world and enjoy being outside exploring!!
